To Dream or Not to Dream? How long is too long?

Question: I feel like I'm stuck. I know what I want to do, but it seems like it's so far away. I love this industry, but I'm like entry-entry level. I want to climb the ladder and all, but it seems and feels like it's nearly impossible. Maybe I'm being too ambitious. How long is too long to chase a dream? When do you decide to let it go and do something else?

Answer: We all find ourselves overwhelmed with uncertainty and doubt from time to time especially when chasing a dream that requires a lot of patience on our part. The positive point from my perspective is just being in the industry you love. Truth is, many college graduates don't even wind up in their core field of choice so that in itself is great especially because there are few jobs to be had these days anyway. Now, I can not tell you that you should or should not stop chasing your dream, but there are few things that are worth considering before you give up on it.
1. 10 years from now, will you regret not pursuing your dream job even if you become successful at something else?I think at 20-30 something you have atleast a year, minimum to dedicate to your dream job. Are you doing everything you can to achieve it? It's one thing to say you want something, but it's another thing to put in the work it takes to have it. Are you really putting 110% into climbing the ladder? After a year, you still probably won't in the position you've dreamed of, but you should be closer than you were. High level jobs usually require many years of experience, time with the company, and whatever degree requirements need to be met as well. One thing you can do to gauge your track to the top is to research other people that have made it already such as the person currently holding your dream job title.

2. While I'm certain experience is going to be a big part of what holds you and your dream job at polar ends, cover your bases. Give yourself a realistic goal as to where you want to be a year from now, know what it will take to get there, and commit to learning as much as you can to meet your goal. If you find yourself over it before the year is up, you'll have your answer. If not, when the year is over, reevaluate where you are and determine if you want to walk away or give it another try. Set a new goal and repeat the process.
3. Are you any closer to it than you were 5 years ago?
We all have many interests and talents, but you have to actively chase your dreams. Make sure you are an active participant in your own life. Don't wait for things to happen to you, but do what's necessary to make things happen.

I don't know how long you have been in your field, but this could very well be your season of learning and growth. Take in all the experience you can get so when your time comes to take the front seat, you will be ready for it, and you will know how to maintain your stature. Some people go out there and reach their goals right away, but it's short-lived because they were not prepared. Be it lack of experience or whatever the case may be; they had not taken the proper steps or done the appropriate amount of research to prepare themselves to get their dream job and keep it. When you reach your goal you want to soar, and have longevity doing what you love. With that being said, you are still young enough to keep investing in your dreams, but be honest with yourself as to weather or not you are committed to the time, research, and dedication achieving your dream may require.
